about

This project is a labor of love for a dear friend to many in the South Florida music scene. Alex Diaz, better known as Xela Zaid, a fine musician and songwriter, suffered a stroke in 2016 which restricted his ability to communicate. Since then, he has been battling to regain a gift many of us take for granted.

The songs on this EP were written for Xela over the course of two days while I was on vacation in Miami, in the Spring of 2018. They were performed as a suite at a benefit show for Xela at Churchill's on May 19, 2018. The band assembled included three people who would record the songs a week later: Eddie, Carey and myself; and one of South Florida's local legends, Henry LaPlume. The recording took place in a span of about twelve hours, scattered across four of South Florida's premier recording studios. The musicians, engineers and producers hail from all over South Florida (not to mention NC and S. America), and most of them worked for nothing but the satisfaction of knowing they would be helping out a fellow artist in need. All in all, the entire project was kind of a miracle, which is quite fitting, given the purpose of it.

All proceeds from "A Suite for Xela Zaid" on this Bandcamp page go directly to Xela, in order to lend a hand to him on his road to recovery, and to assist paying for ongoing medical costs not covered by his Medicaid insurance.

Thank you so much for listening to the music and helping out one of South Florida's finest artists and kindest souls.

GOLDEN

From my warehouse/living room
“Golden Slumbers” residue
Wait for the morning
Hope in the light
Sign for the people—turn right

Oh, Miami, I feel your pain
I wait for the evening
To be clean again
I want for nothing
Far from the ruse
See but not believe
And I’m alone with you

TIME

Here we go again, I don’t know why
But I know what’s happening
Beautiful get this moment in time
Say, “Thank you and come again”

CHORUS: What am I gonna do with you? Where do you wanna go, my friend?
What if I take you to the end? Time has been given and time will be taken away

See-see-my-my-playmate, come on, play with me
I tell you the water’s fine
Well, well, well it’s been such a long time
The down-low is flowering

CHORUS

Middle 8: I took a bath and I made you laugh, then
Suddenly you fall for me

CHORUS

4th OF JULY

You think I don’t think that much of you
But I know that’s not right
I am not the kind of diplomat
To quit without a fight

CHORUS: I am not your “frien-emy”
I am not your adversary
I am not the competition

You can ride your “Whisper Jet”
All the way to Dania with me
Hanging by a thread

We can’t quarrel while we’re dancing
Can you feel one coming on now,
Or is it the wine?

CHORUS

Middle 8: Down-bound baby, won’t you
Kick it around for a while
Found wound, you’ve been holding
Everything so close inside
Set to pop like a firework on the 4th of July
This could be your Independence Day

Solo (over verse changes)

CHORUS

TUESDAY MORNINGS IN THE PARK

Here we go again it’s like to die
Try to catch a firefly
Reverie is hard to bear
In a world that isn’t fair
And a hurricane blew all our trees away
I don’t know what, I don’t know what to say
But I wanna say it to you, anyway
I apologize
For the hate and lies
And romanticizing

CHORUS: Life’s too fast I can’t
catch up so I find
Myself in the park
Life’s too fast I can’t
catch up so I find
Myself in the park

Everyday the world grinds me down more
Cause I keep an open door
Never met a stranger, just friends
And I pray that never ends
Nowadays I write my best songs in my car
Parked by the water, strumming my guitar
Waiting for a bolt of lightning—melody
Sound to set me free
A sanctuary
Too temporary

CHORUS: Life’s too fast I can’t
Pass the time so I
Find myself in the park
Life’s too fast I can’t
Pass the time so I
Find myself in the park

RAINBOWS

*Lyrics taken from two all-time favorite songs
by Derek Holt & David Lee Roth, respectively*

“When I was a younger man I hadn’t a care
Fooling around, hitting the town, growing my hair
Since then, I never look back, it’s almost like living a dream
And ooh… I love… you”

“She ain’t waiting till she gets older,
Her feet are making tracks in the winter snow
She’s got a rainbow that touches her shoulder”

She’ll be ready when the thunder rolls…

WHOLE

REFRAIN/CHORUS: I am missing I am but you can make me whole

Down and distance: 4th and 25
Someone help me, someone make me feel alive
Hard times come upon us all
I see Yeshua, I’m counting on a miracle

REFRAIN/CHORUS

Stumble down the avenue
In another daze
Only children seem to see me now
Telegraph or camouflage
Communication’s changed
Still I know that You can hear me
You can hear me

REFRAIN/CHORUS

FRIENDS

I don’t worry about the local scene
My friends are from Anywhere
Through my ups and downs and in-betweens
My friends always will be there

I don’t worry about the local scene
My friends are from Anywhere
Through my ups and downs and in-betweens
My friends always will be there

When I’m feeling overwhelmed and I can’t make it
My friends always bear my burdens off my shoulders
(shoulders, shoulders, shoulders)

I don’t worry about the local scene
My friends are from Anywhere
Through my ups and downs and in-betweens
My friends always will be there

Life is good thank You for wonderful friends!
Life is good thank You for wonderful friends!
Life is good thank You for wonderful friends!

Gotta have friends, gotta have friends, gotta have friends, Oh Yeah!
Gotta have friends, gotta have friends, gotta have friends, Oh Yeah!
Gotta have friends, gotta have friends, gotta have friends, Oh Yeah!

Solo (over “chorus” changes)

Friends don’t let friends live life alone
Friends pick up when you call their phone
Friends sacrifice their needs for yours
Friendship is Life’s biggest reward

Gotta have friends, gotta have friends, gotta have friends, Oh Yeah!
Gotta have friends, gotta have friends, gotta have friends, Oh Yeah!
Gotta have friends, gotta have friends, gotta have friends, Oh Yeah!
Life is good thank You for wonderful friends!
